The human body has an inherent elegance in its design so that when everything is in harmony, the body works beautifully. Just one piece out of place can have a string of unwanted effects.
The tongue is important in swallowing and speech of course, but it’s also key in breathing and the risk of obstructing our airway particularly during sleep. During sleep, the tongue is held up and forward in the roof of the mouth with the entire tongue in contact with the palate creating a suction. In this way, the tongue does not fall back towards the airway.
Restricted tongue mobility is a common finding but as with many other challenges we face, we find ways to work around the restriction, what we term compensation. The restriction is “fascia” which is a network connected through our entire body. Releasing the restriction and retraining the muscles to work the way nature intended can have benefits far beyond the mouth and airway. Headaches, neck aches body tension, sleep disruption- it’s quite a long list. Tremendous benefits from a fairly simple procedure.
