What Are Dental Implants?

People lose teeth all the time. Trauma, decay, gum disease or old age being the most common culprits. Whatever the reason for losing your teeth, they need to be replaced, both for aesthetic and functional reasons. The best restorative option are dental implants, as they provide a longer-term solution, slow down bone loss and preserve nearby healthy tooth tissue.

Dental implants are artificial, titanium tooth roots that are surgically placed in the upper or lower jawbone and allowed to heal for three to six months.

When planned and placed correctly, today’s dental implants may actually perform better than your own natural teeth. Dr. De Souza always plans the final restoration prior to the implant placement. His method ensures that the end result is the best it can be.

The anatomy of a dental implant

The typical dental implant consists of three parts or segments. The first is the titanium screw designed to be surgically placed into the jawbone. The second is a special connector called an abutment that will hold the final restoration, the third part of the implant, in place permanently. The restoration, or dental crown, is the final piece that restores your smile.

Getting implants right requires advance planning

Dr. De Souza uses his specialized training to create a precise blueprint that can digitally guide implant surgery and provides better outcomes for patients, sometimes with new teeth the same day. He carefully ensures that your restorations fit well and look good. With Dr. De Souza, you can be rest assured that you will look and feel better with your implants.

Traditionally, an implant placed into your bone supports a single crown and this is know as a “single tooth implant”. However, if you have several missing teeth, you do not necessarily need an implant for every missing tooth: one implant can support several teeth via a bridge or denture. The number of implants required depends on the volume and density of bone tissue available at each implant site. Often, smaller-sized implants are used to secure dentures in place.

Dr. Joel De Souza offers his patients the convenience of placing and restoring implants in the comfort of his practice. There is no need for you to go see a dental specialist, the entire procedure is completed at our office location. We also offer growth factors concentrated from your own blood (PRF Centrifuge) and photobiodulation (PBM) for enhanced healing. Call our office to arrange a complimentary consultation

Teeth the same day

Yes it is possible in selected cases to come in with no teeth and walk out with a full temporary set supported by newly placed implants. Book an appointment to see whether this is appropriate for your care.

Dr. De Souza have taken extensive training in many adjunctive procedures allowing him to place implants immediately in extraction sockets where appropriate, to expand narrow and inadequate bony ridges, to elevate the sinus floor and grow new bone for implants and to graft thin ridges to allow for future implant placement. We also work with select specialists in the GTA so that nearly any intraoral site can ultimately be restored using dental implants.
