Root canals sometimes have a negative connotation, but that is largely due to how ineffective traditional methods of cleaning and disinfecting the root canal system have been. For decades, files have been used to essentially create a round shape while cleaning out the canal. This image shows a cross-section of the tooth canal. Due to the natural branching pattern within the tooth, these areas cannot be cleaned mechanically. Only a chemical agent can even begin to clean these areas, and it needs to be in contact with the debris for a significant amount of time in order to digest it. Even then, the best of systems can barely achieve 50% debris removal.

Using Shock Wave-Enhanced Emission Photoacoustic Streaming (SWEEPS) technology only available with the Fotona Laser, we remove virtually all the organic debris within the root canal system. This thorough cleaning of areas which are beyond our ability to mechanical cleaning will enhance the long term success of the procedure. The added bonus is the minimally invasive approach;, since we don’t need the same level of access to attempt more and more mechanical cleaning, we are able to preserve more tooth strength by removing less tooth structure down the entire root length.
