MSE Maxillary Expansion

Crowded teeth are just the symptom, at Olde Oakville Dental we look to diagnose and treat the cause. Expanding an underdeveloped maxilla to allow non-extraction orthodontics and create beautiful faces and healthy airways is our mission.

MARPE/ MSE Maxillary Expansion for Children and Adults

The bony housing for our upper teeth is attached to our maxilla, a skeletal bone which includes the hard palate, floor of the nose as well as the nasal opening, the “cheekbones” (malar processes) and major sinuses. It is actually made up of two bones connected by a suture in the middle of the palate and is connected to several other bones of the skull at other sutures.

This is why an underdeveloped maxilla is associated with a small dental arch and crowded teeth to the point where they may not even be able to grow in, narrow and high-vaulted palate with reduced nasal opening and nasal volume and flat or sunken faces and dark circles under the eyes.

Only a dentist trained in MARPE, or an Oral or Maxillofacial surgeon, can change this either by directed growth (distraction osteogenesis) or surgically although the effect is limited vs MARPE.

In fact, when surgery is absolutely required, MARPE is still done first to bypass this limitation.

These palatal expanders exert their effort on the palatal bone by being buttoned directly there and avoid applying force to the teeth. In very young children, clear aligners (Invisalign First) are showing great results in accomplishing this while the kids are so very moldable!

How Do I Know If My Child Needs Healthy Start?

After a thorough dental checkup as early as age 2, Dr. Joel will discuss possible dental conditions your child may develop that warrant Healthy Start. The Healthy Start appliance is recommended for a number of issues, including:

▸ Underbite Or Overbite
▸ Gummy Smile
▸ Crossbite/ Openbite

▸ Thumb Sucking
▸ Snoring / Mouth Breathing
▸ Deviated Swallow

How Does Healthy Start Work?

The HealthyStart™ System works with the natural forces of tooth eruption. The soft, comfortable, removable devices gently guide the erupting teeth into their perfect positions. In addition, Healthy Start aids in the correct growth and alignment of the lower jaw, expanding the arches to ensure incoming permanent teeth have enough room to erupt in straight, and develop proper oral habits.

Depending On The Age Of Your Child The System Uses A Series Of Appliances:

Habit-Corrector: The habit-corrector eliminates or improves current oral habits that can damage your child’s dental health. He or she wears the habit-corrector at night while sleeping. With a design similar to that of a pacifier, your child will become used to wearing a device in his or her mouth every night. This step lasts about 1-5 months.

Second Phase: Your child will get an appliance customized and sized for your child to wear every night. It aids the incoming teeth into their proper places, corrects jaw relations, and expands your child’s arches for the incoming adult teeth. Your child will wear this device for 2-6 months.

Final Phase: The final treatment begins with a device that accommodates incoming adult teeth. It begins when your child has at least 4 permanent teeth. This phase is extremely important because his or her adult teeth are forming and the gum tissue fibers are starting to attach the teeth in the mouth. Healthy Start works perfectly to ensure the teeth erupt into proper alignment.

What Parents Need To Know About Sleep Apnea And Sleep Disordered Breathing In Children

Snoring and heavy breathing are typically signs that a child is struggling to breathe. Unfortunately 9 out of 10 children suffer from one or more of the symptoms related to Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB). Symptoms like ADD / ADHD, night terrors, chronic allergies, bed wetting, headaches, poor performance in school and more… and the worst part … many children are misdiagnosed or left untreated. Healthy Start is more than a band aid, Healthy Start is a permanent fix. When children are treated early the Healthy Start Appliance System treats the root cause of SDB, correcting bad oral habits, naturally promotes growth and development of the jaw and airway, resulting in straight teeth and good health for life!!
