MSE Maxillary Expansion

Crowded teeth are just the symptom, at Olde Oakville Dental we look to diagnose and treat the cause. Expanding an underdeveloped maxilla to allow non-extraction orthodontics and create beautiful faces and healthy airways is our mission.

MARPE/ MSE Maxillary Expansion for Children and Adults

The bony housing for our upper teeth is attached to our maxilla, a skeletal bone which includes the hard palate, floor of the nose as well as the nasal opening, the “cheekbones” (malar processes) and major sinuses. It is actually made up of two bones connected by a suture in the middle of the palate and is connected to several other bones of the skull at other sutures.

This is why an underdeveloped maxilla is associated with a small dental arch and crowded teeth to the point where they may not even be able to grow in, narrow and high-vaulted palate with reduced nasal opening and nasal volume and flat or sunken faces and dark circles under the eyes.

Only a dentist trained in MARPE, or an Oral or Maxillofacial surgeon, can change this either by directed growth (distraction osteogenesis) or surgically although the effect is limited vs MARPE.

In fact, when surgery is absolutely required, MARPE is still done first to bypass this limitation.

These palatal expanders exert their effort on the palatal bone by being buttoned directly there and avoid applying force to the teeth. In very young children, clear aligners (Invisalign First) are showing great results in accomplishing this while the kids are so very moldable!

How Do I Know If My Child Needs Early Orthodontic Intervention?

After a thorough dental checkup as early as age 2, Dr. Joel will discuss potential dental conditions your child may develop that warrant early orthodontic intervention. It is recommended for addressing a variety of issues, including

▸ Underbite Or Overbite
▸ Gummy Smile
▸ Crossbite/ Openbite

▸ Thumb Sucking
▸ Snoring / Mouth Breathing
▸ Deviated Swallow

A simple way for parents to assess this at home is to check if the primary front teeth are spaced out evenly, allowing room for growth. A lack of space for the eruption of adult teeth may indicate a problem. Childhood malocclusion can affect a child’s development, as well as their breathing and sleeping patterns.

What Parents Need To Know About Sleep Apnea And Sleep Disordered Breathing In Children

Snoring and heavy breathing are typically signs that a child is struggling to breathe. Unfortunately 9 out of 10 children suffer from one or more of the symptoms related to Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB). Symptoms like ADD / ADHD, night terrors, chronic allergies, bed wetting, headaches, poor performance in school and more… and the worst part … many children are misdiagnosed or left untreated. Early treatment addresses the root cause of Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB), corrects harmful oral habits, and naturally promotes the growth and development of the jaw and airway, leading to straight teeth and lifelong health benefits. We work in harmony with your child’s ENT, pediatrician, and myofunctional therapist to ensure comprehensive care. We also offer tongue-tie release when appropriate or can refer to a specialist if needed.
